It was already known that sooner or later the LiveWire, Harley-Davidson's electric motorbike, was going to be serious competition. We knew the Zero Motorcycles range, with its aerodynamics naked street at the head, the Zero S, with its 60 hp of power and 145 km of autonomy on the road, but it was clear that there was not going to be the thing.
At the moment its most prominent competitors are still prototypes, but everything points to the new models announced by Curtiss Motorcycles and NeuWai, a division of South Korean Songuo Motors, will give more than a headache to the iconic Milwaukee company.
The last electric bet of the Curtiss comes to rival directly and without complexes with the LiveWire (€ 33,700). Baptized as Psyche, this new model is also a high-end motorcycle, just like its predecessors: Zeus and Hades (€ 67,000). Perhaps less colorful, although much more realistic and, although exclusive, something more affordable for the general public than its sisters (€ 27,000).
Last year the Lousiana firm already formally announced that it would stop using internal combustion engines on its motorcycles, so it was clear that its production was going to focus on exclusive two-wheeled vehicles with an electric motor.
To date, the Curtiss have given few technical clues of the prototype with which they hope to unseat Harley-Davidson. It has only transcended that it will present two different powers: one of 48 hp and another of 96 hp, with an autonomy of 260 km, something more than the LiveWire (225 km). Less powerful than Harley-Davidson, but lighter: 170 kilos, 79 kilos less.
In terms of appearance, the Psyque follows in the line that its sisters, long and low, with beam-shaped rear swingarm and similar front fork, with the transmission exposed, reminiscent of a skeleton. Although it is the motor block, in the form of a drum next to the swingarm, what makes it special, since its appearance emulates that of a classic boxer. As a curiosity, his name is striking, that of the Roman goddess representing the immortal soul and the youngest of the three daughters of King Sicily.
Despite keeping the aces in the sleeve of certain technical data, such as torque or load options, its CEO, Matt Chambers, has not hesitated to publicly compare the Psyque with the LiveWire. At the moment it is in the 'crowdfounding' phase and it will not be until 2021, when its launch is expected, when we check if the project is up to Harley-Davidson. At the moment it is only a conceptual vehicle, limited to a computer image.
The other adversary of the LiveWire comes from South Korea, with the help of Neuwai, a brand also focused on the creation of electric vehicles, trucks included. It is a powerful bet considering that, 4 of the 12 vehicles that were unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show were motorcycles: two scooters (CN104 and CL104) with up to 80 km of autonomy, a sports one of 53.6 Power CV, and a cruiser (MT104), called to be the most direct competition of the Harley-Davidson electric motorcycle.
Although it is not the norm to find electric motors mounted on ‘touring’-style motorcycles, the NeuWai MT104 prototype on paper is. Generous wheelbase, low height, footrest forward. His style is spectacular. Designed to combine urban routes and long distances, the only one of this colorful electric motorcycle is its limitation in terms of autonomy, since it only reaches 140 km. And that has a 20 kW engine, a propeller capable of towing a caravan, and reaching 150 km / h.
The company, which has reached agreements with some 30 countries including Spain, plans to start production of its new electric motorcycles shortly and put them up for sale in early 2020. We will be watching the news to share here in Spaciobiker. What do you think? Do you think Harley-Davidson should worry?
