HOW TO CHOOSE THE HANDLEBAR FOR YOUR CUSTOM MOTORCYCLE

The handlebar is one of the components that most attract attention in custom aesthetics. As a biker, only you really know which one is ideal for your motorcycle and the one that best suits you. But it is not a simple matter of taste.
The position of the footrests, the height of the seat and that of the handlebar make up the triangle that defines comfort and ergonomics in the riding of a custom motorcycle. A custom biker always seeks to get the best look for your motorcycle, but also to carry a comfortable ride, which allows you to make routes without forcing the posture or taking unnecessary risks.

Each person has their own physical characteristics: wingspan, height, trunk length and limbs. These differential features make each human being unique and, by extension, each biker. Together with the driving style, they will define the relationship that a driver will have with the controls of his motorcycle.

We know what motivates you to give your motorcycle its own personality, so, when choosing the right handlebar, in addition to your personal taste, it is essential to take into account your physical characteristics. In the custom market there is a huge variety of handlebars. In order to decide on one, it is essential to know its particularities, which are defined by the following characteristics:

Height: This is the vertical distance between the tip of the handlebar and the base.

Width: The measure between one end and the other of the motorcycle. Special attention must be paid to ensure that the distance between point and point is not exaggerated, since the hands could be released when turning the handles.

Recline: It is the distance between the tips of the handlebars and the pilot. A smaller recline allows the handlebar to reach drivers with less height.

Grip width: It is the distance of the center line of the handlebar. It must be proportional to the dimensions of the lift, so that the grip pressure is the most effective.

If you find the handle too low, turrets or elevators on the low bars can help to place the handles at the point that is most comfortable for you.

The elevators are accessories that offer us the adequate grip of the handlebar, so that it is well held and secure.

Thickness: Refers to the tubular diameter of the bar. Basically there are those of 22 mm and 25 mm, but you can find them to a greater extent. Normally they carry certain perforations to be able to introduce all the wiring inside, that will give service to the electrical parts of the motorcycle.

The wingspan of the handlebar and its proportions will markedly mark the finish that a rider wants to achieve on his motorcycle. But you should not only consider their appearance, but also their ergonomics.

There are different types of handlebars suitable for each motorcycle style. We talk about the most prominent:

Ape Hanger: They are tall and wide, offering the appearance of fists in the air. Many times they are exaggerated, which makes the pilot appear to be hanging from the handlebars. They are suitable for long-arm riders, who will spend a lot of time riding. We usually see them on chopper type motorcycles.

Ape Hanger of medium height or ‘means let's hang up’, with smaller measures, between 20 and 25 cm. They are lower and offer a more open position.manillar-moto-custom

Drag Handlebar: They are narrow and flat, offering an aggressive aesthetic. The position of the elbow is at right angles with hand and wrist in a neutral position. Greater comfort can be achieved by establishing them with curved or straight elevators, to reduce stretching in front of the controls.

Drag bar: This is a straight or almost straight handlebar, of low height, somewhat inclined towards the driver, which offers a position more advanced to the central point of the motorcycle. It is not the most suitable for custom motorcycles.

Handlebar with horns: They are practically the same height as the hanging means, but the position of the hands is much closer to the pilot. They are not too comfortable, since it is not a natural position.

Pull Back: They are reclined handlebars, ideal for pilots of lower height. Moving the clamping position up and back with respect to the standard handlebars improves the driving position. But they are not only aimed at low drivers, but they improve the ergonomics of any rider, since they offer a more straight and relaxed posture on the motorcycle.

Beach Bar Width: It is a handlebar of low height and width, which helps to separate the arms, offering breadth and being able to handle the motorcycle easily. They are specially intended for long-arm pilots.

Z-Bar: Its shape is determined by two zetas opposed and welded to each end. It does not have much scope, it is quite premiere, with a somewhat rough aesthetic. It is more common to see it on Sporster type motorcycles than in classic custom bikes.

In addition to feeling comfortable with the chosen handlebar, you should check that you reach all the manual controls of your motorcycle with the handlebar in total turning position. It is also important to check that when you turn it, the cables are stretched without problem and there is no element of the motorcycle that comes with the tank.

For the ITV, the change of handlebars is no nonsense. This is a fairly important reform in your motorcycle, especially if it requires internal wiring. If you do not want to be in the position of changing handlebars every time you have to pass the review, it is best to legalize your reform. By the way, if you are looking to save a few euros, your thing is to consider legalizing several reforms at once, and in SpacioBiker we offer you the best advice to document your customization through our reform expert to pass the ITV, we leave you  HERE all the information .
